Telescopes to star gaze within our Dark Skies Reserve

Exploring

For the perfect break we would recommend a mixture of the following options (but mostly option 1!)

Option 1 – Relax

Whether you snooze on the luxury king size bed or sit by the camp-fire sipping a mug of cocoa; the best reason to come and enjoy Hesleyside Huts is to unwind and relax.

Campfire

Campfire

Nothing beats a camp fire as a means of relaxation. Toast some marshmallows in the moon-light, have a fry-up at sun-rise and enjoy a good book at sun-set. We provide the initial supply of wood and all the equipment to cook inside or out.
Star-gazing

Star-gazing

We are within the Northumberland Dark Sky reserve. We can provide you with a complete star-gazing kit to take full advantage of this rare opportunity to witness the night sky without light pollution. A must is a visit to the amazing Kielder Observatory visit Kielder Observatory
Fishing

Fishing

The most popular “sport” in Britain is also the most relaxing! Rent a rod on the well regarded Hesleyside Beat (max 3 rods), Hesleyside Huts makes a perfect fisherman’s lodge during the fishing season (Aug-Oct).
Walks

Walks

If staying in our secluded huts doesn’t make you feel close enough to nature you can make use of a number of private walks, many in ancient woodlands, which are only available to our guests.

Option 2 – Explore

Let’s face it, as you’re in the heart of the Northumberland National Park you might like to leave the luxury of your Shepherds Hut and explore some hidden gems.

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall

No visit to this area would be complete without a trip to Hadrian’s Wall. As we are within savage territory you’ll need to travel a short distance south. The drive to Vindolanda itself is stunning.
Gardens

Gardens

If you are a lover of gardens and grand stately homes, then Northumberland has plenty to offer. Of course you will have heard of The Alnwick Garden, the finest contemporary garden in the UK, but other equally delightful gardens can be found at Howick Gardens & Arboretum and Cragside Estate to name but a few.
Northumberland Coast

Northumberland Coast

It’s a good drive but one with near constant views to the horizon and where you are unlikely to see another car. The Northumberland Coast offers stunning & deserted beaches, ruined castles, rocky islands and wonderful fish. Highly recommended for those here for a longer stay.
Kielder Observatory

Kielder Observatory

You’ll be able to see the Milky way from your hut but if you fancy viewing the rings of Saturn why on visit the famous Kielder Observatory which is only 20 mins drive away.

Option 3 – Adventure

If reading a book or a gentle walk doesn’t quite do it for you then you have come to the right place.

Kielder

Kielder

The reservoir and surrounding forest are becoming the new Mecca for those seeking adventure. The largest man-made dam in western Europe and filled with hidden works of art, walks and experiences (we love our visits to the Kielder Birds of Prey Centre) but the real reason people are flocking to Kielder is the adventure.
Adventure

Adventure

Off-road mountain bike trails, sailing, water-skiing, the Calvert Trust Adventure Centre and kayaking are among the options for those looking for a bit more of an adrenaline rush during their stay at Hesleyside.
Biking

Biking

The lack of traffic and breath-taking new view around each bend has meant that Northumberland is now the premier destination for those who like to explore an area by bike. We can arrange bike hire if required or suggest routes from 9 – 90 miles.
Surrounding Area

Surrounding Area

There is a huge amount for the adventurous spirit in the area. You could try one of the more challenging walks, explore the area on horse, try your hand at Go Ape at Matfen.
