From the Roman ruins of Hadrian’s Wall and magnificent historic houses and gardens dotted around the county, to the spectacular scenery of the Northumberland coastline and of course the world renowned Dark Skies at the Kielder Observatory, there are a multitude of places to discover all within easy reach of Hesleyside for those looking to venture out and discover what Northumberland has to offer.
We highly recommend a visit to Hadrian’s Wall. Whilst there are many locations to choose from, we suggest Vindolanda, a Roman fort and one of Europe’s most important archaeological sites located 30 minute-drive away from Hesleyside along a spectacular route.
It’s a good drive but one with near constant views to the horizon and where you are unlikely to see another car. The Northumberland Coast offers stunning & deserted beaches, ruined castles, rocky islands and wonderful fish. Highly recommended for those staying a little longer.
You’ll be able to see the Milky way if you’re stargazing from your hut but if you fancy viewing the rings of Saturn, seeing the Dark Skies Northumberland close up or extending your knowledge of the universe then a visit to the famous Kielder Observatory (only 20 minutes-drive away) is an absolute must. Booking is essential.
If you are a lover of gardens and grand stately homes, then Northumberland has plenty to offer. From the award-winning Alnwick Garden located in the grounds of Alnwick Castle (a great day out in itself) to the fascinating history of Cragside Estate and the Howick Hall Gardens you are spoiled for choice.
